Southern Baptist Literature Disappoints Again
I teach the little ones during the Sunday School hour at our church each week. Specifically the four and five year olds. I take the job seriously and endeavor to provide a quality hour of teaching time each week. I share my sister's opinion that Sunday School should be more than just cookies, Kool-Aid and a Veggie Tales Video. I've also had my share of "beefs" with the SBC literature over the years.
This week, I have yet another.
As I got out my Betty Luken felts for tomorrow and looked over my lesson plan, I noticed the memory verse for this week which is: "The people met together at church." Acts 2:46 Since we all know that the church is a group of Believers and not a building, I was puzzled at the wording of that verse so I looked it up for myself. My Bible (NKJV) reads: "And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart." Perhaps many of our adults struggle with the concept of the Body of Christ because they've been taught from infancy that the church is a building. I don't agree with the home church movement (that's a different post) but I do understand some of their frustrations.
You think I'm being picky, don't you? Maybe I am. Just keep in mind (especially you folks whose names were on the cradle roll of your church) that a lot of the Scripture that you call to mind today are the verses that you memorized as a child in Sunday School. I know this because childhood memory verses frequently flood my prayer times and I am always thankful for this Scripture that was memorized as a child.
I just want to make sure that I'm helping the next generation of believers and not handicapping their souls for life.

Thak you for your dedication to teaching the children. I am frustrated with many of the other versions of scripture. My dh is a Southern Baptist minister and we use only the literature with the KJV of scripture. I hope that the SBC will continue to offer it...if not we'll be seeking literature from some other source.
Again...thanks for your dedication! Love your blog, btw. My first time to visit today!
