Loser Mom
That would be me. It's true. In case you didn't know it, I don't really care much for animals. Not really. Oh-- I've grown a little attached to our cat, Kennedy. After all, he's been around for nearly 4 years and really requires very little of me. But fish, plants and, well, hermit crabs . . . that's a different story altogether.
Ava got a fish for her birthday last summer. "Goldie." She died exactly 3 days after her arrival to our home. Hmmmm. Try again. Maybe I didn't follow the instructions correctly?? "Goldie Two" came to live with us the next week. THIS time, I KNEW that I had followed the instructions to the letter but that poor fish still died a week later. Anna was heart broken at this point and I was really at a loss. I told her that our water must be too hard for fish. (I have no idea if this is true, but there was no way we were going to have a third fish funeral.) What to do? Hermit Crabs! That's the ticket! We already have an aquarium, now all we need is a little sand and something for the crab to crawl on. Off to Petsmart we go!
We've had the hermit crabs ("Crabby Abbi" and "Zach") for about a month now and last night, Ava came into my bedroom sobbing. "She's dead! She's dead!" Cole gives me a knowing look and said, "Michelle, how often do you water the crabs?" Water? How often do you have to water a crab? I told him that I made Ava water the little sponge every 2 or 3 days. "You have to water the sponge everyday or they will die, Michelle!" Oh.
This morning, when I saw the crab casket pictured below, I knew I was the ultimate: Loser Mom.
In case you can't read it, it says: "You were a great FRIEND. Love, Ava ;)"
Sigh. Looks like another trip to Petsmart is right around the corner.

Not a loser mom. Try, Mom more focused on other *more* important things.
If it makes you feel any better, the girls still ask me why I wouldn't take Earl the bunny to the vet two days before he died. I had no idea it was *that* serious... That was 2.5 years ago and they will not let me forget it.
You crack me up. At least your honest about it! I'll join the Loser Mom club. I haven't had the greatest luck with pets. Come to think of it, plants don't last around here either. Hmmmm.
LOL!!! That is too funny! This is my first visit to your blog. Your picture that said "Would it kill you to comment?" made me feel guilty, so I decided to come by. You know, guilt works for me :-)
Okay, I'm in the loser mom club as well! We've had fish that died and hermit crabs that also died. (even when watering them regularly, we had to get a book to learn it all)God finally gave us a sweet dog, hopefully he will last a while. I think they are more durable and he knew I wasn't ready for a puppy.
Megan- I forgot about poor Earl. Ugh, I think I would be feeling worse if my dead pet had been something cute and cuddly... At least it (she) was just a crab.
LL- We get a poinsettia from the same sweet lady every year. This year, I was determined for that plant to live longer than 7 days. I watered it everyday and it started dying in 3. Someone eventually told me that OVERwatering poinsettias is worse than UNDERwatering them.
Hey Supermom- Thanks for stopping by! I'm so glad my guilt tactics worked on someone-- especially someone as funny and as well written as you.
HJ- I am NOT going to succumb to the dog club. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not! Because...correct me if I'm wrong, it WILL be me taking care of it. And OH GREAT-- hermit crabs require enough specialized care that someone has written an entire book on the subject. Nothing can be simple.
TOFTG - Laughing at your comments. For the record, your comeback to blogging is a blessing to us all! ;)
I totally agree with LL! We are so glad to get to chat and hear about you!
As far as the dog care, I did not want one so I told my hubby if he made that call than he and kids would be caring for dog. I have stuck to my guns and for the most part they are the care givers and cleaner uppers.
