Works for Me: Charcoal????
"Eeeeewwww! Our van stinks!!" I don't know about you, but we've left our car windows down when it was raining more times than I care to admit and the result can be a very smelly van. Somewhere along the line, I heard that charcoal is an excellent odor absorbent--and so I tried it. It really works! I once did this in an old refrigerator too (circa 1950-- purchased for $10 at an auction to be my "garage refrigerator") and this little trick worked beautifully in the fridge as well. Just get a plate or a bowl and dump several lumps of charcoal in it. Next, place the charcoal in the middle of the van or the refrigerator and leave in overnight. The next morning--WaLa! Odor be gone! I actually did this just last night and we used a 9x13 pan for our charcoal. This morning there was no awful odor assaulting us as we opened the van doors. This has definitely worked for me on more than one occasion and I know it will work for you too. That is . . . if you need it. :) For more Works for Me Wednesday ideas, click on over to Shannon at Rocks in My Dryer.

Great tip! My seventeen year old daughter will be thrilled how to get the dead mouse smell out of her '87 car.

That is such a great tip. I had no idea that charcoal did that :)

Now that is a great idea! I often have an "unidentifiable" smell in my car and what a quick and easy solution!

Fantastic! Do you think it'd work to put one in each of my teenagers sneakers?

I wish like crazy I had known this when my friend's son accidentally left a sippy cup full of milk under the back seat of my car last summer. It took a few days for us to discover the nasty cup and several weeks to finally get rid of the smell. Adding charcoal to my shopping list right now ... THANKS!

What an awesome idea! I need it, too--our van has the constant "did-someone-change-a-diaper-in-here" smell. Thanks for playing along!

Thanks for the tip. We live in a humid place and if the kids spill water in the car it smells! I am going to try this. Thanks for the tip.

Great tip! We also were told by our recent movers (United) that if you put coffee grounds in a sock and put it in your refrigerator that this works too. It keeps the must and mold away. It worked for our refrigerator sitting in the garage for 10 mos.
