The Quicker Picker Upper- Works for Me
This is probably not a very creative Works-for-Me-Wednesday idea, but this really works for us, so I thought--"Why not share?" (It's not as lame as when I lauded the insulated sippy cup, I promise.)
At least once every other day, and sometimes everyday, I announce to the kids that we are going to have a 50-dash-pick-up. This just means that everyone in the family, from least to eldest, has to scurry around the house to find 50 items that are out of place and return them to their "home." Anything can count as a part of their "50." (A barrett, a match-box car, a string, a piece of trash, a pair of shoes counts as 2 items, etc...)
If the house is in real disarray, I'll announce a 75 or 100-dash-pick-up. It's the real "quicker-picker-upper." (And if you remember that old Bounty commercial, then you are as old as I am. Ha!)
As always, we're all so thankful to Shannon for continuing to host these fun Wednesdays. Be sure to check out all of the great ideas over there.

OK, I am as old as you are!
I like the "number of item" pickup. Good idea.
Love this idea!
My kids are all under the age of five, so I normally do it with ten or they get overwhelmed, but I have to remember to expand the idea to include trash and all toys. Thanks for sharing.
I'm as old as you. I could even sing the jingle for you.
We could probably have a 100 item picker upper today. But any tips that make cleaning seem fun for the kids (well--for me, too) work for me!
I'm with you on the Bounty commercial!
That sounds great - we are always looking for ways to include "fun" and "clean" in the same sentence! We have family in town this week so it seems like there's ten times more "stuff!"
That's a great way to incorporate counting in to clean up time. Munchkin can count up to twenty now. Maybe with clean up time tomorrow, we can try to count together to 25 as we pick things up and put them away.
Good Idea!
Good idea! And I bet it can help with counting skills!
We like this idea too, but we either use the timer (a 3 minute pick up, for example) or we do Age Pickups - each person picks up an item for every year of their age. If it's bad, we do a Double-Your-Age pickup. We have a lot of people, so this works for us. And I'm exempt from the doubling for obvious reasons: I'd be picking up all day!
Great idea. I love that the kids are learning that the house is to be maintained by everyone.
And I am as old as you...
"The quil-ted, quicker picker upper... Boun-ty!"
how come I never thought of this? My kids are at the perfect age for it to be fun but also see an end in sight. Thanks
ttnWhat a great idea! At what age does this work?
I've posted a WFMW tip as well. Stop by and take a peek. :)
I think this is a great idea, I would probably have to up the number in my house just because of all the toys the kids throw around LOL
Love it! What a clever way to get your house picked up. I wish my 10 month old could figure out how to pick things up... I have a fun video of him throwing an entire shelf of books onto the floor. Oy va.
BTW- I love your daughters comment.
That is a great idea to get the kids to participate in the daily pick up! Thanks for sharing!!
My WFMW had to do with children and chores too. It sure makes our job easier!!! :)
I love this idea!
Love it!! Maybe I'll start with a smaller number, I don't want to discourage my little ones!
Thanks and blessings,
Joy
Great idea. My kids are pretty good with the quick jobs, esp. if I can make it competitive.
We've done this--it works!
Might have to try this - anything to get stuff picked up!
