Breast is Best
Someone asked me the other day--"Did breastfeeding hurt?"
Well, yes, it did. In fact, it hurt like crazy for at least the first month with all five of my babies. But we got through it and eventually, we landed on the other side of things. So, if you're thinking about breastfeeding and you're just not sure; OR if you're in the middle of those first excruciating weeks when your entire body is sore and you feel like throwing in the towel--read this article.
"We're the only species on the planet that drinks another species' milk," Geraghty said. "Human milk is what these babies need."

Ya know, I don't know how many times I read that it if it hurts, you're doing it wrong. But it hurt like crazy with all three of mine at first. I could never figure out what I was doing wrong. Even the "lactation specialist" said I was doing it right.
Too bad the epidural had worn off by the time I started breastfeeding. That could have come in handy that first few weeks.
I breast fed 3 of my 4. I loved every minute of it...the pain and all. And yes it did hurt like crazy, but it is so worth it.
Stick to it, ladies. It is the most special bonding time ever with your little one!
Yes, anyone who says "if it hurts you're doing it wrong" is out of their ever-lovin' mind. But it's worth it. You go, girl!
Thanks for the encouragement! I'm stil nursing my 10-month-old, teeth and all (he's got 4 so far). It goes hurt sometimes, but it's so worth it... I get to sit down, he's not getting into trouble, I get to stroke his beautiful hair, and I'm burning calories at the same time!
Oh yes--never forget the calorie burning benefit. If I could breastfeed forever, I wouldn't have to be on Weight Watchers right now!!!
My little girl had thrush and it got on me....owww, however, we got through it and I lOVED breastfeeding...they are soooo precious!!! Looking up at you...whaa! Go for it anyone out there!
I breastfed all five of mine and every time it hurt for about the first two weeks - alot! After that, no problems. After the first couple kids, it was just something I came to expect and knew it would pass.
Definitely worth the pain (X5!). I'd do it again, no question! Nursing a baby is like nothing else in this world!
My first lactation instructor was a man, YES, a man who said the same old thing, "If you're doing it right it won't hurt." Of course, he said this as he was demonstrating with a polyester breast stuck to the front of his shirt with velcro. Oh, and a cabbage patch doll, too.
I know nothing about breastfeeding (yet), but I just want to say how much I am looking forward to it when my little one arrives! I can use all the information I can get my hot little hands on! I know so far that it will probably hurt, be hard, will burn lots of calories (woo-hoo!!!!), is the best thing for me and baby, and is going to be an experience like none other. Thanks, ladies!
With my third baby, I had a month-long case of thrush. OUCH! But we perservered! Thanks for that excellent post.
Woop woop! Applause from this breastfeeding advocate! Just wanted to point out that (1) many of us have pain-free breastfeeding experiences and (2) often pain CAN be relieved by working on baby's latch or your own position. So don't let the thought of pain be daunting; breastfeeding IS best! :)
