No time for blogging today...
because I'm too busy TAKING OVER Jule's comment section over at Everyday Mommy! **blush** I was sitting here at the seminary library, waiting for Spencer's last class of the week to finish and thought "Why not just 'check a few blogs.'" I know what you're thinking--and no I am NOT addicted to blogging. I can stop ANYTIME I want. Seriously, ladies (and the three gentlemen who read this blog too--you know who you are), there is a great discussion going on over at Jule's place about the way we "do church.' Julie asks:
Is what we think of as Church really how we should do Church?" Does the standard format, which you'll find at almost every church on Sunday morning, line up with Scripture? Does it line-up with the early church? Are we doing it all wrong, but don't even realize it?
Start with this post and then move onto this post and then JOIN IN. Or if you're not ready to join in, at least THINK about these things. This is a great topic that all Christians need to chew on.

I was so inspired and totally agreed with what you had to say about the fact that church should exist to encourage us and motivate us to be missionaries in our work places during the week....the mission should not be can we get them into our building and watch them walk the isle...but rather can we share our lives with them and show them Jesus wants to be part of their lives too...
The success of each Christian's personal ministry should be measured in what we do/say for Christ on Mon-Fri....Sunday is a refueling day, but not an accurate measure of our spiritual growth...that is why it is so nice many churches are now leaving the scorecard (weekly, monthly, yearly, last hundred years average attendance) off the sanctuary walls. What a farce that any of us would check those numbers and sit in our pew feeling a smug sense of approval for how we're living/growing in Christ! We must continually remind one another just as Paul did that the Lord Jesus is all about discipleship...what an amazing God! I'm so glad he cares about our lives...our daily struggles, joys...all of it..this is the power of the gospel...how can we accurately capture all of that in the walls of our church building? No lost person is suprised to see Jesus glorified in church....but...to see Him spoken of and shown in how we treat one antoher and our families live...in our culture...that is a BIG surprise to anyone lost....and the world is HUNGRY for that kind of testimony...

P.S. I kind of went around the globe with all my comments...sorry it is so long...I was just inspired when I read your reply :)

I have agreed with your comments over there. Due to several moves in the last ten years, and one sense of dissatisfaction, we have "church hunted" at least four times in that time. We always remained active attenders--somewhere--and we never gave up. We, too, had to figure out what our dealbreakers were. I think that there are a few ways that it could be done "wrong," but in general what I have seen is that there are hundreds of denominations and churches for a reason. They will meet the needs of different people. And I really loved what you said about church not being for the saved or unsaved, but for God. Amen, to that.

Thanks for taking on that toughie - I liked what you said about dealbreakers. We have weathered many an imperfect situation because we felt overall the theology was on target.

My faith in God is not going anywhere, because it is founded on His word, not on fallible man. Unfortunately, some people's dealbreakers focus on what I would consider "style." This has torn up many a church.
